Chicago Collections Consortium is proud to welcome author and scholar Dr. Mary Ann Cain who will be speaking on her book South Side Venus: The Legacy of Margaret Burroughs which traces the life and work of curator, artist, educator, and activist Dr. Margaret Burroughs. Published by Northwestern University Press, this is the first biography of Burroughs and is culled from oral interviews and Dr. Cain's extensive archival research at the DuSable Museum, the Art Institute of ChicagoNewberry Library, South Side Community Art Center and the Chicago Public Library. Burroughs, a SAIC alumna (BA 1942, MA 1948, HON 1987), is remembered for co-founding the DuSable Museum in 1961 and the South Side Community Art Center in 1940. South Side Venus explores Burroughs’ life and work on Chicago’s South Side through the lens of the artists, scholars, and others impacted by her leadership.

Dr. Cain will discuss her research techniques, highlighting experiences with information professionals at respective institutions.  Dr. Cain will be joined by Skyla S. Hearn, DuSable Museum’s Chief Archivist and Special Collections Librarian who will provide context through examples of partnerships, programs, and projects that demonstrate lasting effects of Dr. Burrough's legacy. Immediately following the discussion, Dr. Cain will sign copies of the book which will be available for purchase.

Thank you to our hosts the School of the Art Institute of Chicago John M. Flaxman Library and the Art Institute of Chicago Ryerson and Burnham Libraries.
