Chicago Collections Consortium is proud to welcome Illinois Secretary of State and State Librarian Alexi Giannoulias for a discussion on the critical role libraries play in our communities and how the Secretary of State’s office is dedicated to the fight against book censorship in our libraries. Learn more about Giannoulias’ first-in-the-nation legislation, passed in May 2023, which supports public and school libraries and librarians as they face unprecedented censorship of books and resources in Illinois. Secretary Giannoulias will also be joined by Illinois Assistant General Counsel Amy Williams who will address the implementation of the anti-book ban law and its impact on Illinois libraries.

In 2006, Giannoulias was elected Illinois State Treasurer, becoming the youngest State Treasurer in the nation at age 30. After leaving the Treasurer’s Office in 2011, Giannoulias was appointed as chairman of the Illinois Community College System. He also became Senior Director at BNY Mellon Wealth Management and taught at Northwestern University. Secretary Giannoulias graduated cum laude from Boston University with a degree in economics and earned a law degree from Tulane University’s School of Law.

Amy Williams has been an Assistant General Counsel with the Office of the Illinois Secretary of State for ten years. In that role, Amy provides legal guidance and drafts legislation for several departments, including the Illinois State Library. Amy has been practicing law for seventeen years after graduating cum laude from Northern Illinois University College of Law in 2006.
